Why Did No One Mind Being Late This Time?
The train station was unusually calm for a place where nothing was happening on schedule, and Thomas noticed this almost immediately because he had prepared himself for frustration, impatience, and at least one dramatic announcement echoing through the hall. Instead there was a strange sense of collective acceptance, as if everyone had silently agreed that today would not follow the usual rules. The departure board showed delays in polite, neutral language, avoiding any mention of how long the waiting might actually last, and people responded by settling into the benches with unexpected grace. Thomas sat down, checked his ticket, and waited for the familiar irritation to arrive, but it never did. Around him, a couple shared a bag of pastries meant for later, a businessman loosened his tie and began reading a novel he had clearly been carrying for years, and a child methodically counted pigeons without running out of numbers or enthusiasm. Every so often someone would stand up as if prompted by instinct, look toward the platform, and then sit back down, satisfied that nothing had changed. Time stretched gently, without pressure, and Thomas realized that he was paying attention to things he normally rushed past, like the rhythm of footsteps on tile or the way sunlight shifted across the floor. When an announcement finally came, it was brief and unconvincing, offering no real information and yet somehow reassuring everyone that they were still exactly where they were supposed to be. Thomas laughed quietly to himself at the thought that perhaps the delay was not an interruption but the main event, a shared pause disguised as inconvenience. When the train eventually arrived, there was no scramble, no relief, just a calm rising from the benches as people gathered their things and boarded without urgency. As the train pulled away, Thomas felt a faint disappointment that the waiting was over, as if he had been gently returned to normal life before he was quite finished doing nothing together with strangers.
